    Data mining selfies

    http://mashable.com/2014/08/13/passive-hashtags/

kinda crazy, next level image recognition. something as innocent as putting your yogurt in a car cup holder is getting you classified as a particular user and then being marketed too. pretty soon everything you do will be super tailored to your tastes/age/interests.

but how will you develop new ones if you only see what you're already into?

My squirrel needs new machine gun.

Getting ads tailored to my taste doesn't mean that new products/ services wouldn't be offered. If I like Coke, Pepsi won't just give up because I like coke. If I already like Coke, it is also pretty pointless for Coke to "bombard" me, a reminder now and then would be much better.

For all the data people get they sure can be dumb. I looked at some new walking shoes online for a couple of weeks.. and then bought some online. Do the online ads for shoes stop? Nope.

You need much more shoes, you just don't know it yet, but the ads "do".

Also creating a need is quite big part of advertising. Can you feel it? Hmmm.. ammmm.. hmmm.. you are starting to want a hat with a propeller. Luckily I sell those.

yeah we all have the same issue with that. and i guess aka123 has a point, i just feel like it's so next level big brother style, just taking a fun innocent selfie some girl takes will now be analyzed and broken down to bombard her in any way possible to buy some pointless shit.

Another one of those things that's geeky cool, but at the same time has the potential to be extremely creepy.

Then again, if you were able to go back in time 20 years and explain the global tracking and targeted advertising of today, including a computer program reading all of your emails so it could decide what ads to show, they'd probably think it was creepy.

I need a tank. I see no ads about tank sales... Maybe because I have no selfies on the internet, yes? Maybe I have to make some...

I watch a lot of foreign language videos to the point where YouTube now shows me many ads in Korean. It also gives me the "translate" link on comments posted in English. All signs of information overload. It'll be cool when my refrigerator teleports in whatever I just ran out of, but getting there is a challenge.

                          Yeah, I agree here.

I completely deleted my Facebook about 3 months ago, haven't used social media for about that long. It feels like my world has opened up and I'm seeing things that I did not see before glued to the fucking phone every time I was in a line to get food, or waiting for gas to pump, or any other 2 secs I used to waste checking my Facebook, feeding my narcissism on whether people were liking my photos.

Best thing I ever did. My appreciation for life came back.

I was blind to so many things when I was consumed with social media.

I would see the same ads all day, everyday, and not get exposed to new and interesting things.

It feels like Wall-E or Idiocracy coming to real life the way it's all going.

They're being pushed for a reason. There's a new selfie story in the news everyday.

I think it has as much to do with normalizing a world in which everything is recorded. We won't fear it as much if we socialize it and sexualize it.
