Can I use ns1.mydomain.com point to another hosting company and ns2.mydomain.com to another hosting company also?

If ns1.mydomain.com is down does ns2.mydomain.com will work still and my sites will be up and running still?

It is recommended to have nameservers at different locations for redundancy purposes.
