I use to have over 100+ stores as I've got plenty of aged .com keyword domains so wanted to do something with them. Sometimes it panned out and other times having the domain parked equaled more dough. Anything you can do to make them unique does help as Google is more of a Cunt these days. Better off with 5-10 stores that have unique text than 100 stores with nothing unique about them.

I started a couple of very niche blogs on Tumblr a while ago as a bit of an experiment and more or less forgot about them - They now have a few thousand followers and 100's of reblogs a day - I thought some matching very niche Amazon stores might be a way of monetizing them - Any other ideas are welcome - Mainstream is very new to me...
I've got FreshStoreBuilder . It's pretty decent, but they want you to use their Hosting. Plus, their tech support is kinda noobish. The software basically makes store pages that link to amazon links... it even requires customers to login, when they add stuff to cart...that's locally hosted (stat-wise) as well...but after that it goes to the amazon link.
it's pretty amazon friendly as well...as amazon is aware of it..and it allows us to use their API to ingest products daily. But there's a limit...and you can't ingest nowhere near ALL the products that amazon has. You can import thousands though.
Their support consists of both a forum and a ticket system. I highly recommend the Rewrite Spinner that can be added on. You can rewrite literally everything automatically...from URL , Title, Meta tags, product descriptions , etc..
