Anyone knows how good does this Google's adrvertising program work?

It works great ? but it depends what do you want to promote and what conversion is there.

It seems the key is finding a sponsor or site to push traffic to that isn't overplayed (or being pushed by someone else).

Then it's picking keywords and a decent per click budget for placement.

I did break-even business pushing a $20 per signup site a few days ago, but then hit 2 days with no signups and still pumping cash into google.

It seems like you can do a lot quick if you put some $ on the line, but you could lose it just as fast with no return.

Adwords works best with a sponsor that isn't already pushed by another adwords user, trust me on that one it can get pretty nasty.

Also it would work better if you're trying to brand your own site instead of pushing a sponsor. The benefits can of course be harder to measure, but even if you don't break even there's a bigger chance that prolonged exposure will bring type-ins in the long run.
