If you're sending email, the goal is not just to "send email" as a mass volume, throwing shit against the wall strategy.
The goal should be to inbox and increase traffic/conversions/branding of whatever you end objective is for the product or website. That can take a lot more than simply loading up an old or current membership list and hitting send. Effective delivery involves creatives, subject lines, quality of your ip's, content of the message, spam score, so on and so forth.
In short, anyone can send email. However, your objective should be effective email marketing.

that is more of a mainstream type mailing approach with the hard-sell, soft cell pattern. With adult you just send out a half-price offer, target the best you can... it's not anything you can overthink

No offense, that is completely naive.
If you think there is no difference between effective delivering to the inbox versus the junk box (strategy/technique), or managing your data (cleaning out screamers, bounces, unsubs, etc), so that you do not burn out your ip's or their reputation........ that goes to show how little you know about email marketing in that regard.
If does not matter if you're sending adult half price offers, or mainstream flexhose. The goal is to not get complaints, not burn up your ip's, and effectively hit the inbox so you have a chance of converting whatever offer you're sending. Obviously some folk understand this concept and are more successful accordingly.
