SEO Question, Multiple Domains, Same IP

I just heard that websites on the same dedicated IP, that are linking to each other, do not get as much relevance as websites on different shared servers, linking to each other.

Is this true? I suppose it makes sense, but then why does google penalize sites that are on the same ip, that are linking to each other. I suppose that there is room for abuse, ie. having 500 domains all pointing to each other on the same server, but then what is the point of even having a dedicated server, if you only have a handful of sites, and of course you are going to link them to each other?!?

Can you prove that it's true?

I did that exact thing with 1000s of domains and blogs for years.and years So did many people I worked with. The whole thing about class c ips has never, ever been true. That's not to say I haven't spent obscene amounts of money spreading networks across hosts and for ips but that's just because I sometimes thought "why not?" But there was never a clear benefit to me doing so.... and eventuly I stopped.

This is a silly myth that started in about 2003 that originally came from Adwords and their implementation of keyword relevance metrics and lp quality - where those who were there remember well, waking up to see minimum bids on keywords set to 5/10.00 and people were trying to create what appeared to be legit websites instead of single landing pages and hide all the relationship between landing pages to keep them live in Adwords (multiple accounts, targeting same keywords with similar landing pages)

Google looks at linking relationships primarily. You can do anything you want and you can host on Mars and Saturn - but you can't hide linking relationships between sites and pages. The short answer is yes.

That's not to say you don't want to spread things around to improve the link profile (links from blogs, forums etc)... But there is no reason to spend retarded amounts on the "seo hosting" scam
