    Basic photoshop help....please

    I have an image that is 1100 X 733

I am trying to make the image into a banner and keep it from being too stretched out

Keep it scaled and reduce the size to 840 x 189

is there a trick I don't know about? is this possible?

I have tried using Transform in photoshop but when I reduce the height, obviously the image gets stretched out.

    Thanks for the help...

When you open 'image resize' window - click 'constrain proportions' box.

1100x733 will only reduce to 840x189 if you stretch the image. Otherwise, if you resize the width to 840...the height will be 560 if you constrain the aspect ratio proportions.

The issue is deeper than this

If i constrain proportions and reduce the width to 840 pixels then the height stays at 533 pixels

I need to reduce the height without stretching photo too much. I am not sure this can be done

Cant do it. You'll need to free transform and crop some of it out.

Press 'C' for the crop tool.

Change the crop tool width to 840 and height to 533.

Drag across the image, move to what you want selected - press enter...........

If you constrain proportions and reduce the height to 189 - the width will only be 284. I'd be tempted to come up with a happy medium between constraining the aspect ratio and stretching it too much.

I've had banner designs in the past where the aspect ratio was outta whack with what I needed so I just redesigned it from scratch using the size I needed. Lot more work, but sometimes there's no work-around.
