How do you you tell someone who is at least 150-200lbs. over the weight limit for a chair (rated for 400lbs.) that they're just too damn big?

Or do you just wait for the chair to let them know?

1) who do you know that is pushing 600lbs AND can still move to sit in a chair?
2) what kind of chair is that?

I just witnessed this last weekend... we were at a concert and saw this really large woman going to her seat, which were floor seats and they are those folding chair type. We watched how she trying to move her way into the row, all while people are getting pushed and shoved.

She sits down... then two minutes later... BOOM! chair down!

Odd thing was she just stood up and kept shaking (dancing?), like it wasn't a big deal or she's done this before

Many years ago I worked with a guy who was very big (probably about 500lbs) in an office setting. Most of the chairs they had simply were too small for him and he had to take the arms off of them to sit in them. Then the shock in them broke pretty soon so they sank to the floor when you sat in them and he had to get a new chair. After going through two chairs, without saying anything to him, the management went out and bought a special chair for him that was rated for someone his size. On his way home when the office was mostly empty they pulled him aside and gave him the chair. They simply told him, "I have a feeling you will be more comfortable in this chair."

He was happy, they were happy and nobody was embarrassed/upset. The next day when a few people notices he had a new chair he was the one that said, "yeah, they got me a fat guy chair and it is very nice."

If it is not a work setting then I guess it would depend. If this person was a friend of mine I would just tell them that the chair might not hold them. If they weren't and they were just someone I saw on a daily basis somewhere I would likely just say nothing, but you could always pass them a note or pass a note to the management of the place and give them a heads up. Maybe they will find this person a better chair.

I had the same problem with an employee..... I finally told him that the chair was not safe for persons over 250 lbs......

The guy is 6'4 and about 400 lbs......

He replied...... I'm not over 250 lbs! WTF

This is one of the problems. Some people will not admit they are larger. A friend of mine coaches his daughter's high school softball team. There are a few girls on the team that refuse to admit that they need a size large uniform so they will squeeze into a medium. Not only are they clearly uncomfortable in it, but it looks bad stretched out like that.

He tried telling one of the moms and she was offended that he was suggesting her daughter was a size large.

I had this problem with my daughter's team. She came up with the solution. She cut the size tags out of the uniforms and passed them out by favorite number, not by size. Smart kid.
