open it in a texteditor, look at the beginning or the end, you can see the header of the file. With some luck you can see what the original format is. when a gif is saved as jpg, there will be GIF in first line of the file.Don't let greediness blur your vision | You gotta let some shit slide

Any other image program open them? If so try to resave one with the other program and then see if PS will open it. I have an old image program called photoimpact that PS sometimes has problem reading the files.Comment

images I shot, moved to another drive and burned to disk... out of 1500 images, 80 will not open in the last 2 folders. right now I've loaded them on to a card, deleting them and trying to pull them back up with a card rescue app... only idea I have left
I've tried widows, PS, bridge to open them as well as aseedsee. even changes the extension to JPG, jpeg, png, and NEF...Last edited by Grapesoda; 04-16-2013, 01:02 PM.Comment

The best free image recovery program is https://online.officerecovery.com/re...o-file-online/, but isn't as easy to use as others, and a good free trial to try would be http://www.hketech.com/JPEG-recovery/index.php
I would use some Jython and import/export the initial image to a new one pixel by pixel if those don't work or no obvious problems with plain text.
