I know with dogs that get tear staining under their eyes, they say to put a little Vaseline under the eye. When the tears flow out of the eye, they continue to roll down and off the face, and don't soak in right under the eye, thereby reducing or eliminating tear staining.

I have no fucking clue what legitimate reason you would use Vaseline on a child at bedtime.

Sometimes my eyes become extremely dry. It's not the eye itself but the skin around the eye. It reaches a point where I want to rub my eyes to ease the dry skin, and rubbing the eyes is not a good thing. That's why I use Vaseline Pure Petroleum Jelly.


Description

Vaseline packages their pure petroleum jelly in a variety of a ways. I most often see it in a tube or jar. I buy the 13-ounce jar. The jar throat is wide to accommodate my dipping fingers. It also has a lid that can be removed and replaced as needed.

This is a smooth jelly that has a shine to it. In certain light, one might think it part liquid. The jelly has a yellow color when in the jar, but when applied goes on clear. It has a slight scent that is barely noticeable.


What is Vaseline Pure Petroleum Jelly?

This product has been around a long time. Vaseline describes it as mixture of mineral oils, paraffin and microcrystalline waxes. The jelly has a melting point that is just above human body temperature, which means it quickly dissolves into the skin.


My Experiences

I only use the Vaseline around my eyes when I have a noticeable problem with dry skin. I dip my fingers into the jar and massage the jelly under my eyes, around them and across the eyelid. I am stingy in applying the Vaseline since I do not want to actually get it in my eyes. I am very careful when using it. I immediately notice a happy difference in the dry skin around my eyes. The itching eases and in most instances vanishes. I often apply the Vaseline at night around my eyes just before bedtime. Since the jelly absorbs into the skin, I never see traces of it on the pillowcase.

This works well for the dryness around my eyes. However, if you have never used Vaseline jelly, I recommend testing it on other areas of your skin before applying it around your eyes. Make sure you don't have a reaction to it. If you have any doubts about using the product, consult your doctor. Better safe than sorry!

The jelly feels slick on the fingers. Once applied, it quickly melts into the skin and does not leave any greasy residue. It leaves a slight shine on my skin, but I doubt anyone else would notice. The product has a slight scent in the jar, but the odor does not stay on the skin.

In a pinch I have used this petroleum jelly in place of hand lotion or lip balm. It is designed to work well on chapped or dry skin, sealing in the moisture and locking out the elements. I notice an improvement in my skin when I use it. The skin feels softer, too.

It is also a good makeup remover. I don't wear a lot of makeup and rarely need a special product to remove it. However, when I do need to "gussy up" more than usual, Vaseline does a great job of removing the makeup.

A little of this product goes a long way. A 13-ounce jar lasts me a long time. Vaseline suggests that the shelf life of their products is two years when they are kept at room temperature. I have had Vaseline jelly keep longer than that, though. Its properties don't change, and it works great for me.

Note: This product is for external use only. It is not meant to be applied over deep wounds. The manufacturer suggests that if redness or swelling occurs to consult a doctor. It is also recommended to keep this out of the reach of children.


Purchasing

A 13-ounce jar costs me $4.49 at my local pharmacy. I find buying this larger jar is more cost-effective than purchasing a smaller size. As a comparison, a 1.75 ounce jar sells for $1.99.


Summary

My grandmother used Vaseline Pure Petroleum Jelly as does my mother. It's a great skin treatment that works!


Update -- June 19, 2008

I visited the dermatologist and the conversation coasted to the dry skin area on my leg. That patch of skin can either be an angel with no problem, or it feels as though I could scratch it until the skin peels. The doctor suggested using Vaseline Jelly on the area, once in the morning and again in the evening. "Inexpensive and it works," she said. In hindsight I don't know why I didn't think of it since I've used Vaseline on my skin with success. The doctor was right! That itchy area hasn't bothered me since I started applying the Vaseline. I'm delighted!

When a child has overly large and overly firm poops.... which happens pretty often, it can really hurt them. You can help things to move along much easier with a lube, and really reduce the pain.


Speaking as the father of the 19 month old, I know this first hand.
