If you think that the answer is 48, then you consider that you have to complete a serie with only the right part that matters.
so: 12, 24, 36 and 48

But personally i would probably answer: 60...
I just saw an alternative way to think the problem where you conclude that the answer is 48.

I think they take the "then" as "fill this in". "what goes here". I just dont understand how they ignore the question mark on the last one.
