I'm surprised there are doubters - then again, people who have never worked in the field can't imagine the shit that goes down.

Other 100% real things I've seen:

A blind, mentally retarded man grab a chunk of dookie off a bathroom floor and stuff it in his mouth like a Tootsie Roll.

A down syndrome woman with pica eat a small, warm chunk of fresh vomit sprayed across a living room rug by a nauseous housemate.

An old, blind, mostly crippled, retarded man with a scrotum so long & saggy that it would dangle into the water every time he sat on the toilet - which then made him convinced he'd wet his pants after standing and pulling up his pants - and so he'd demand to change his clothes. Every fucking day.

Actually I kind of get why there are doubters. Until you work with people with mental retardation and/or acquired brain injuries, it's hard to imagine how fucked up some people are. It's sad.

Here's another. I didn't work with this guy personally, but one of the retarded guys who lived at the company group home had a compulsion to jam objects in his ass. Not only is it gross, of course, but he would injure himself with pens & pencils and sharp stuff like that. Well, due to this behavior, all possible harmful objects were removed from his bedroom (in other areas of the house he was under constant staff supervision, but obviously at night he was alone in there). Well, there was one object nobody ever though to remove - the light bulb from the light on the ceiling. Yup, he unscrewed it and jammed it in his ass...and it broke. I'm sure that was a fun shift. I'm sure emergency rooms have seen it all...but I wonder if they were prepared for a retarded guy bleeding out of his ass.

Never worked in the field, but out of HS, I layed tile. Once project had us redoing the flooring in a dozen group homes that housed special needs teens. One was an obese boy, who literally didnt know when to stop eating. They had everything locked down, and had constantly searched his room, the entire house and his body for foods he had hidden.

Another was a kid required to wear a bicycle helmet all the time, since he liked to bang his head into the wall intentionally and very often. They literally had a leash / harness on him when going on/off the transport bus.

Third scene I clearly recall, was a boy and girl sitting in the family room masturbating each other in front of others. Completely unaware of their surroundings, they only knew it felt good.

I watched the caregivers line these kids up 2-3 times daily to give them their meds. Some were on a dozen different pills. While I am fascinated by watching people and their social behaviors, I was freaked out by everything I witnessed. I thanked God for not being fucked up like them, and counted the days that the job would be finished, and I would never have to witness what I did again.

Exactly. Most people never witness this kind of shit because the population is largely hidden from the rest of society - initially in big, horrible institutions (where many actually learned to act like retards - because they were neglected and learned crazy shit from each other), and now in group homes.

I saw some good outcomes, too, though. But I have crazy stories I'll never forget. You can't make that shit up.
