Who Runs A Server?

A Host ive been with for a while http://www.erotihost.com

The servers have been down for 2 days so i write into the help desk, and i get this:

Please refer to the global email that was sent out explaining the data center move. As of Friday @ 6pm servers are in transit to the new Tampa data center. They are scheduled to arrive with a no later than time of 9am saturday morning given by UPS.

The servers should be up within 1 hour of receipt.



Well now its near 2:30pm and still not up.

Is this common for hosts to do this? Wouldnt they have backu servers for times like this?

I have made my own linux distro to run it
I administrate it all, from the uplink line to the desktop stuff

My downtime is 0, so your problem is because of a lazy admin.
Get another hosting company and you are done

no it's not common.. but hopefully they are upgrading servers.. maybe you were on a t1 - t3 and they are upgrading to a t5 or something.. or just moving data centers.. hopefully not down grading

my main host is isprime.com and i never have any downtime or other issues.

I only leave this one up because my dvd site is on there and would cost too much to move it to a new host since the scripts were designed for this one.

However now that i dont have processing for my dvd site ... maybe its time to dump the domain, i dunno

Pulling what your host did would put most adult hosts out of business. That sort of downtime is not acceptable under any circumstances. The only way I can concieve of excusing it is if some catastrophic natural disaster had befallen the data center. And even then I would have my shit back up in less than 24 hours.

It would seem to me in my vast wisdom that: YOUR HOST SUCKS.

Shutting down everyone's servers and then sending them via ups to a new data center just seems stupid and not very professional.

Sheesh i know downtime is evil, but i didnt think 2 days is THAT bad ... its happened 3 other times for a total of about 12 days in the last 6 months or so with this host. I just never thought i had an option since it would cost me money to move my site.

Another reason i never switched is because i usually hit like 60gig-80gig per month, and they never charge me anything more than $8.95 per month. I think they dont know how to charge for overage, and my plan only includes 5gig per month, LOL!!!!

Well, ill be doing some thinking if i really need that site up anymore ... dunno, maybe ill try to sell it again

i have 4 pages on that server that are #1 for certain keywords and bring a good amount of recurring sales to different sponsors.

With those pages down durring google update, im likely to lose my spot, AND my signups ...

what does my dvd sales and my sponsor sales have to do with one another?

if/when my pages lose their top spots, i lose about 40 recurring signups per month.

I can easily swap the domain to a new server, but then my dvd site hits the trash can since im not going to pay to have it re-setup

I host with Verio, they moved some servers months ago, but from like Stockton, California to the Bay Area, San Jose I think, they most likly drove them over as it's like 75 to 100 miles. I got 3 or 4 emails reminding me about the move, they were down like 2 or 3 hours at the most. Why your hosting company used UPS, I don't know, I'd think Fedx unless they are to heavy. And did they try to save money with UPS and ship' em regular, 2nd day or Nextday.

I don't know that much about servers but if it's there DNS (think this is right) server yes.

Reminds me of ProTGP... 1 week with them and the ONE site I had hosted with them was down for about 80 hours due to some crisis of some sort.

Thats fucked up, Isprime is 59 a month for 100gb and you know their reliability. Rock solid. Just dump that nonsense. Before they back charge you for all your overage they missed but have suddenly found.
