Recording external audio (mic), what program?

Looking to record audio on a PC and wonder what the best program is, without having to spend the money on something like ProTools. Suggestions?

There are lots of sound editors out there and most have free or limited trials. My advice would be to download a few and see which one you like the best.

+1 for Audacity... especially if you are looking for something free. If you want low cost with a ton more options, Reaper (reaper dot fm - sorry, can't post links yet) is a great deal as well although it goes way beyond simple audio recording.
