    Can anyone recommend a collection of free themes that are great for MAGAZINE type mainstream sites? The more diverse the better.

              That's fine if it's just a few blogs but, if it's a lot of blogs you might as well get a developers license for a premium theme as the cost per blog will be low. I recommend Thesis.
