    CurrentlySober: Got a question

Yesterday (?), well Friday's Daily Mail had a headline about how some English soccer team "could not afford" to do something. It was not about finances and it immediately made me think of you.

My question is whether or not your "I can't afford . . . " was inspired by The Mail or if it is a British thing?

Not the way this was written, it was the same tone as CS uses when he can't afford a job and stuff like that. Wish I could remember the headline, but that was a very long day for me. If you have Friday's edition it will be easy to find.

I was hoping this would be a rhetorical question, such as "do you like poo?"

Would it be used like 'She can't afford to put herself at risk in a situation like this" ....has nothing to do with money/finances - ...if so....Americans use it in that sense. lol at least I've heard it used that way for years. I dunno

Have you never read a CS response? Context. It is all about the context.

Morning Baddog - No its not a british thing - Its my take on how the industry (or the industries perception of itself) has changed.

Think back to 2001 2002 - You would see a thread saying 'Who likes my new Lamborghini' with a generic stock photo. The OP may well have bought the car, or might have been BSing, but thats not the point - The point is that you would get 30 replies saying how people preferred their own Lamborghinis - How there Lamborghini was a better color, or how they bought 2 Lamborghinis themselves the day before, therefore invalidating the OP claim to have bought one etc...

OK, I know it was the way of the board, and people were earning more money back then - But I doubt that 30 odd board members all had multiple Lamborghinis... But everyone was PROUD to say how much they were earning - Even if it wasnt all that true...

Fast forward to present day - Someone posts 'I bought an iPhone' (A standard thing owned by many) So I reply 'i cant afford an iphone... ' as my 'take' on the board today...

Perfect example was a few years ago, if someone got ripped off, they were ripped off (Genuinely) for thousands, if not more, and there would be a short thread about it - Just the other day, I had the misfortune to find myself in a 4 page thread of back and forth over $20.00 !!!

I mean OK, principles are at play, but if the biz is now in a state where $20 warrents a 4 page thread, instead of just letting it go? Then I feel my 'i cant afford...' to be even more relevant.

So in essence, its just my personal sense of humour, as opposed to a 'Brit thing '

beautiful post, I've been thinking about this for a while now too, and reading the forums the last few years here reminds me of the adage "if you want to be successful, hang out with successful people, millionaires, etc." more and more here it is rubbing shoulders and hanging out with people that can't even afford to buy a used car, let alone a lambourghini. plus the blog threads where you have dozens of overenthusiastic minimum wage workers all clamoring together in awe of the other guy that says he made $50 this month pretty much sums up the other thought in another thread about why it is dying
