Odd Google behaviour

Well odd...maybe something that's normal for people who know more about SEO than me (like Paul).

I recently linked a paysite of mine that ranks pretty high for a certain keyword from a really old blog. A blog that hasn't been updated for 3 years or so. Gets no traffic, (maybe 30 hits a day from old links) Pr1.
Within a few days Google put that blog on the #5 spot for that keyword. I figured it was just a hiccup and it would dissapear soon but it's been there steady for a week now.

Any logic behind this that i didn't know about?

All my sites are badass. Even if they aren't badass. So it must be something else.

how old is the linking domain?

4,5 years. That will help for sure. But still i'm amazed how i got listed so high just for linking something. Should be the other way around normally.

kinda vague...

- what is "pretty high" for the paysite? higher than the #5?
- how competitive is the keyword/phrase?
- was the anchor the keyword/phrase or the domain? and/or is the domain a of the paysite keyword domain?

and if you prefer not to answer those, then i defer to CurrentlySober's answer

not really. depends on what the keyword is. if it's something with little competition, super micro niche, etc... and an aged, trusted site simply mentions 'keyword phrase', it's gonna hold more weight with G than a newly launched 'keywordphrase.com' or whatever. not that it will STAY that way...

but again...you never know with the big G

Well it obviously isn't for "porn".

It's not making me 1000's extra but it def brings in some sales.

No matter the keyword i'm trying to understand the logic behind it as i never experienced this before.

the logic is that text in anchor also counts as content text.

Google likes it when you use the keyword you want to list for in your blog...

So that one post made my blog move to #1 for "keyword + blog".
A big keyword.
Crazy.

I'm amazed this gets so little attention. I personally think it's a big thing and like to know more about how this works. Just placing a link to a site resulted in quite some traffic. To me that's very interesting.

Now i'm in doubt what to do. I want to start updating the blog again so Google will keep seeing fresh content and keep me at #1 but i also don't want to mess up anything. I'm afraid to touch it now. Any suggestions?

Nothing unusual,for example i link to trade with his site title and then i rank in top 10 for his site title keyword.Usually happen if keyword is not too competitive.

So you think it's normal to out of nowhere rank #1 for a major keyword + blog by linking to a site?
