    iPhone = Fail

So we finally broke down and bought an iPhone. While we've had a bunch of iPods, this was our first iPhone. More or less my kid needed a new cell, it was the weekend the latest iPhone came out, and it was the cheapest phone I could get her.

My kid complains that the phone doesn't work with our wireless connection, and she can't use the phone for much. Seems without a wireless connection the phone can't download apps, music, Facebook, etc etc etc.

I'm confused here. I have an Android phone, and it doesn't need a wireless connection at all. I can download anything anytime any where. Are you honestly telling me that you require a wireless connection on an iPhone to download apps, buy music, do Facebook, and pretty much 75% of the apps?

You only need wireless for large apps.

You sure you setup the wireless correctly? I <3 my iPhone.

It seems to me that the iPhone requires a wireless connection for Facebook. You've got to be kidding me? My Android does EVERYTHING without a wireless connection.

Is my wireless set up correctly? I got an entire PC and four laptops running off of it, so yeah, it's set up fine. I got it work - eventually - but I'm just wondering why the iPhone depends on a wireless connection. Why pay for cell service if your phone requires a wireless connection? Just so that you can call someone?

If it keeps asking for wireless you didn't set it up properly. It remembers networks.

You do not need wireless to access or download facebook using an Iphone. Something is not right for sure. If your network in your house is fine then I would point my finger at the phone itself, maybe a hardware issue. Did you add a data plan when you got the phone?

the facebook app is a notorious piece of shit.

but you should be able to do pretty much anything without wifi you can with it...
this assuming you have service wherever you are... i can drive 100 feet down the road and go from 3G full bars to "no service".

That has to be the problem. I get the issue on my Android phone sometimes, where it won't use the 3G/4G unless until I turn off wireless searching.

Being as I've never so much as touched an iPhone before and knowing that a dozen other devices that use my wireless connection, I was in fact creative and was able to figure it out. It's working now, but that's not my issue. Not my fault you can't read.

Everything my kid does seems to require a wireless connection. If there is a way not to use a wireless connection let me know and I'll set that up. Everyone who comes to my house with an iPHone needs my wireless connection, so it seems to me that iPHones require it. Which is utterly stupid for what is considered by most the best smart phone.

Iphone can run on data networks just fine, it has a limit for dling apps over the 3g network to save users money.

If facebook etc weren't working when you weren't on Wifi, then your data isn't setup on your phone.

People want to be on your wifi, cause data costs more than using someones free wifi.

Richard... AT&T service is notoriously non-existent in most areas of Lincoln. Whenever I'm at my brother's place off Ferrari Ranch, the only way I can be online is with his Wifi connection.

It's just a service issue. If you had a good signal, the only reason the iPhone needs a wifi connection is for apps exceeding 20mb.

I've never had an issue connecting to Wifi or downloading apps on 3G and not on wifi. I'd say only about 5% of the apps I've come across want you to be connected via wifi to download due to their large size.

BTW, the iphone is slowed down speed wise to for battery life. There is a reason the droids suck ass for battery life and the iphone lets you surf/email/text/phone the whole day.

For example if a baby monitor is on in the house that runs on the same frequency of your router it will not allow your phone to connect. So question is what do you have in the house running on that frequency and next the answer may be to get a new router that is compatible. That said you don't need wireless to dl most apps. Even fb. Sounds like something is wrong there. The message you get telling you you need to connect to wifi will only say that if the 3G network is running low signal as well.
