i know to setup a rails app on hosting you have to do some magicial shit with addons to apache, and starting the rails app.

Nothing special with them at least, it's built right into cpanel. Have run many rails apps without issue.

Heroku hands down. But I don't use it for adult. Heroku + Github + RubyMine is a winning combo

Maybe useful, similar as Heroku but for PHP, supports many app frameworks and in my opinion perfect.
We used it recently for making a dating/flirt message platform combined with Amazon S3 storage, cloud messaging and only big ups for this one.
