    Problems using Registerfly

Since I'm not the only one using registerfly it could be interresting to get other peoples comments on what happened to me.

The story began a few weeks ago when I had 5 domains I wanted to renew. They had little traffic so it was barely worth it in my opinion. I found the domains I wanted to renew, choose 1 year and filled out the payment form. After that a sort of status page appeared that said the domains was added to some sort of renewal queue. I refreshed the page a few times (bad idea!) til I got "ok" or something simular. Ey, happy so far, why wouldn't I be?

Just to be sure I went to the domain manager to confirm that the domains had been renewed. WTF, renewed until 2007 it said! I checked out the renewal history and it confirmed that 3 ordernumbers had been processed (one of them actually renewed the domains twice!!). One ordernumber for every refresh I did.

I contacted support and had some strange replies the past couple of weeks. All sorts of questions about the domains and finally they asked me to send my card number. I'm not going to send them my card details in a support ticket!

Today I got this brillian answer I just had to share with you:
My boss has told me that you were charged for all of your years of registration. You will have the domain names for the time you paid for and years can't be removed. If the years could be removed we would do so and refund your card but because you refreshed your browser (and work with a live connection to the registry) you will have to pay for the years on your domain names. At least you have renewed them at the discounted pricing before we raise it in the near future.
Seemes like they've got a serious bug in their renewal system. What do you think? Comments?

The most annoying thing was his last comment though!

If those are the facts charge the fucker back. They should have given you a more professional reply. I would move my other domains thought just in case they close your account...

It's more that their system seemes to be fucked up. I can't be the only one refreshing my browser after renewing...

Course, I'd like my money back aswell... I was hoping to be threated better by support. I only authorized a payment of $44.95 and not $179.80 ... I've never charged anything back. Would banks, visa etc understand this?

I use registerfly 'cause they allow me to add funds to my account via paypal. My surname has an apostrophe in it (O'Flaherty) and it seems to choke their system. Everytime i add funds, i have to email a contact at registerfly to have them manually added. Every single time, i inform them of the problem, and they say they'll have the techs look at it.

Never get a response. Been going on for months. Not exactly a major problem, just a common annoyance. Their prices are pretty good, and they're the only registrar that i know of that allows me to use Paypal.

Extract from my conversation with their support:

chodadog: I think your system is choking on my name (O'Flaherty). Quite a lot of online systems aren't built with apostrophes in mind.
FLYsupport: Look I am not from the payment department.
FLYsupport: So if you have any payment questions then please contact the concerned department.
chodadog: Yes, i was hoping you could put me in contact with someone that was, as the direct contact i usually use is not working out right now seeing as the email bounced!
FLYsupport: No Sir. no one can come to chat.

But yeah, that's fucked up about the refresh problem. Serious bug in their system. But i can just about guarantee you that the problem will not be rectified.

It's an inconvenience. It's not exactly that great of a problem. I always have enough funds in my account before i top it up, just in case i find some domains i want in the meantime. They're cheap, and they let me use paypal. Haven't been able to find another registrar that has these features.

I have about 30 domains with registerfly and have been with them for 5 years. As much as I like there domain manager, I often run into some sort of bug when buying with them. I can see why you hit refresh cause after you hit submit on a purchase it tends to hang for a couple minutes before letting you know what's going on. The guy you need to tell your problem to is Tim Shor, he can get things done over there. I can't remember his email for the life of me, but if you ask live support for his email they should give it to you.

thanx lazycash.. lets wait for their next brilliant statement. If he comes up with something like "atleast you got it cheap" again, I'm contacting Tim. No I'm not trying to get registerfly look bad, but they need new support people... (but hey who doesn't)

Don't really understand why they aren't alarmed by all of these bugs. Chodadog's problem should be easy to fix. After all, we are not dealing with a small registrar (they claim to have 225,000 customers). I find my refresh bug to be a major one so I would be alarmed if someone found such a bug in my system. Afterall, they can't charge people if people don't authorize the payment...

They have been good in the past at resolving issues with me, I wish you luck. Technically the refresh isn't a bug. Generally speaking its not wise to ever hit refresh during an online transaction or it will multiple bill you.
