    Cloud servers - again....

With a cloud server can I just open an account and be charged for what I use?

So if I use $10 or $100,000 that is what I will be charged?

Will I have cPanel and maybe WHM installed as usual?

Help me on this one - I am lost....

Most commonly you would need to adjust RAM, disk space, CPU etc. as needed. You could start with a $25 cloud server, then adjust the settings upwards periodically as needed.

Once you get to about $100 or a hardware server is often a better value.

This is what I do not get - I thought it did all the adjustments for you....

For example the first month - I use 3TB traffic and X Hours of RAM and CPU time that is what I am charged for....

Then, if I used 110% of that next month then I am charged 110% without any messing around from me...

      Or 50%, 500% etc....

      Am I explaining this correctly?

It depends on your cloud setup. I am in process of setting up one on Amazon and while you are charged by the hour for server resources, the resource can be increased or decreased manually or automatically.

I signed up and left Amazon in 20 mins flat. I don't want to learn a whole new system - Its bloody scary!

They have my CC number - Just hope they don't bill me for anything.

I just want a cloud version of a VPS or dedicated server that will just bill me for what I use and will not shit itself if I buy some traffic.

I thought that was what 'Cloud' was about?

"Cloud" is largely a new buzzword for a lot of older technologies.
In it's most extreme and fully integrated form, you can get fully automatic scaling which is what you're wanting.
                  More often, cloud = VPS = vmware = 1999

You can do a lot of cool things with various technologies that are now grouped into the "cloud" group, including Clonebox, which we think is super cool. You have to look beyond the buzzwords to see what you're really getting, though.

In a nutshell, at Amazon, and I assume other cloud hosts, you basically launch a server (EC2) based on your prefered OS (AMI), prefered hardware capabilities (instance type), region, zone, once launched connect and add whatever programs you need to the server (LAMP, etc), save your customized server as your own AMI for later use.

Then when you need to grow you can either expand out or up. Out being add additional instances behind a load balancer using your own AMI as a template or up by relaunching your current AMI using more hardware capabilities (CPU, RAM), ie a larger instance type. Both of these adjustments can be done in minutes either automatically or manually.

It is a powerful system that needs more than 20 minutes to fully comprehend and implement. This is probably why they allow new AWS accounts to launch what they call a micro instance for free for a year so people can play around with it without worrying about getting charged.

The best 'cloud' domain I had was 'LondonCloud.com' - I lost it due to some C&D shit - I should have fought it.

Anyway - I found this great package that worked great until I looked for info like a root password or an IP address - The sort of shit you need....

It was perfect on paper - exactly as I described - What a shame.

Then they overcharged me £65 and when I asked for phone support it was going to cost me 50p a min or I could 'upgrade' for £4.99 a month to get it cheaper!!

The 'Live Support Chat' guy, who did not have a clue was embarrassed.

So pissed off - a waste of a whole nights work trying to sort it out - And I expect it has cost me a few quid as well.

I think the best thing you should be aware of is that cloud servers are really nothing more then a glorified Virtual Private Server. The reason why cloud is so popular is because of the pay as you go and for the provider the ability to easy switch the user and there setup on the fly because of the shared disk nodes.

You should be aware that unless it is your own private cloud network, cloud is no where near what should be considered a production environment. If you are doing anything that requires heavy diso i/o you should not go anywhere near it.
