For the sake of discussing our own router security, someone tell me if this is right...

- Your main passphrase is used to connect to the router.
- Using this passphrase, the router generates and leases a temporary password to the device. Lease time is based on your router's settings.
- Hacking software scans the air for signals on the target connection and is able to decipher the temp password for one of the devices. (and MAC address to get around MAC filtering if it is set up?)
- Access time is limited to only the time left on the lease, unless the router's hardware password is still the factory default and you can increase the lease time. If you don't have the hardware password, you have the remaining lease time for your random number/letter password guessing program to get it right. This is assuming the router is set to allow admin access through wifi connection and not just wired.

no software will do the hacking for you... although I know how and have done WEP key hacking (takes at least 30mins), WPA is a lot tougher and you can just go to a McDonalds and get free wifi faster and without the hassle. it's really not worth the effort, I hacked my neighbors just because I wanted to see if it was possible. but other than that i'd prefer to go to my local mcd's when my net goes out for an extended period.

One of my neighbors hacked mine and was uploading music. Then I turned off SSID broadcast on both of my networks, renamed everything and new passwords of course, then used an old router and made a new network called "Hack this, Asshole"

The new router doesnt even have a network cable plugged into it, but sometimes I plug in and check the logs and have seen people logging onto it and trying to get free internet.

Sometimes the simplest shit amuses me.
