I am a embarrassed to ask for this but can anyone recommend a good tutorial on creating themes on Wordpress?

I am more of a designer than a programmer and even as a programmer I am more familiar with Coldfusion than anything. I have skinned for other cms type software before without any issue (Magento, Mura CMS, Mango CMS, FarCry CMS), I just never had a need for wp much at my mainstream job and when we did need one I built the layout then it was given to a developer while i worked on designing the next job.

I had found what looked like a decent tute but it was written in like 06 lol. The cms systems above you can pretty much just add your graphics and modify the css and layout pages to build a theme, even with Magento you can copy their theme and mod it up then just add and remove certain modules/blocks via xml pages and layout pages. The few tutorials I have gone through talk about the loop and writing like 10 pages to get the thing to work lol. I am just hoping someone can say "hey, here's one that's accurate" and post a link for me if possible

I have a blog site I would like to write some posts for and I see now that wp is prob the best way to go, just have to jump that initial hurdle.

i would get familiar with the template tags

and look at the hierarchy, to see how the templates are called

I would start with either twentyten, twentyeleven as a base to have a look at the code.

or i would download starkers theme.

also have a peek at chip benetts theme, it has the best wordpress coding standards out there. (code wise)

http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development has all the info. But even most of those old tutorials have all the basic info you need and give you better step by step instructions.

Hey man, thanks for the input, if you happen to jump back to this post again, could you let me know which site you are referring to? Not sure if you are talking about the site on my sig or if you found the blog site I was referring to via site in sig. Here is how I see it.

The blog site needs a lot of work. I built something fast so that I could play with the affil tools. I built a basic layout and threw up some rss feeds using rss-html. The feeds are fucked up though and display the same feed like 3 times for some reason.

There is a lot of empty space in the top and right side I would like to use for ad space later on.

Anyway, I do appreciate the info. If you can, please let me know if you see them differently than this.

Thanks for the advice V Rocks. I am assuming you are referring to my current sites. I will be trying to rework the blog site for wordpress soon.

Usually when I build a site at work, I go into the process of using 960gs or something similar. For my blog site, I wasn't sure what I was going to end up doing and just designed/threw something up fast. I usually don't play with rss feeds much and thought that was the right way to do this (I now know different). The Tube site in my sig is nubiles script and everything is encoded, just some light css on my part on the elements I could modify. I don't want to put much work on my two tube sites. I am afraid to using nubiles. If i ever manage to make some money I would want to buy a non encoded setup like mechbunny and go to town. Just nervous that changing one for the other may be a pain so I don't want to put much into this version for that reason.

Either way Ill have a look, I probably should brushen up more on my css.

Hey everyone.

Sorry to bump this, I just wanted to thank you all once again for all of your assistance. I installed wordpress on this domain today in a test folder and was able to duplicate my layout. It wasn't too bad though thanks to everyones links/input.

I'm going to take some time to try to find any useful plugins and then try to shift this over in place of the rss driven site once I have a few posts written.
