I wouldn't consider the SX30 IS, with it's 35x optical zoom, to be a compact camera. It is a very nice camera, though.

Yeah I agree, but apparantly its classed as one by Canon :\
I guess just because its not a SLR/DSLR it has to be a compact? lol

I believe that one falls into the SLR-like or prosumer category. Nice manual mode, great lens, but not quite an SLR. It's a nice camera.
I just got the Nikon L120, 21x zoom. Not quite as many manual settings that you can use though.

If you can afford 100 bucks more, I would reccomend the sony nx3. smaller, same pixels, 780p hd, mirrorless aps-c sensor, and interchangeable lenses.

Short sample movie on vimeo:

Sony has a nex5 that's like a hundred bucks more, I think the only difference is that it shoots in 1080p.
Here is a review i found on the nex3

The same couple have a page with their field test, nice looking shots in there.

Best of luck finding a camera.

My father in law has the SX30 IS and already wants to upgrade to a DSLR model.
Spend you some brain.
