    computer problem question

I did some searching around and can't seem to find an answer so I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone knows off the top of their head.

I'm having a strange problem. Periodically (about every 2-3 min sometimes less) my mouse freezes for 3-5 seconds. The windows plays the error sound and it starts up again. I checked video and mouse drivers, tried switching the mouse to a different USB port and scanned for virus and spyware.

Is it just maybe that my mouse is getting old and needs to be replaced or is there something I'm overlooking?

This is not a definitive answer...but it very well could be the mouse going bad. Only you know how old the mouse is but I have had many of them go bad. For whatever the reasons are they do not seem to last as long as a keyboard or a computer.

I think you are probably right.

Just after I posted this it froze again and this time I got a message saying that the USB device had malfunctioned. the mouse is probably 5+ years old so I won't be shocked if it is going bad

I don't know how long it has been since you rebooted but a reboot sometimes fixes problems.

LOL nope it is well used. I am heading to the store soon and I will get a new mouse there. I am pretty sure that is it. I have been playing around with it and when it freezes the light on the bottom goes out too so I have feeling it is just worn out.

Don't see why your PC would restart if your mouse stopped working. Sounds totally unrelated.

It doesn't. The mouse freezes then after a few seconds the computer plays the error sound and it starts working again. I'll know soon what is going on. I'm heading to the store to get a new mouse.

                      one of two things:

                      1. Mouse drivers are locking up.
                      2. A background process is eating all system resources. Check your resource monitor and see what happens.

You're mouse is 5 years old so more than likely it's bad. If it's like mine it gets knock around a lot. An optical mouse cost what $10? If you can get 5 years of use for $10 you're doing good.

I got a new mouse and the problem seems to be solved. The funny thing is when I bought the old one it was about $20 for a corded mouse. I just paid $30 for a pretty damn nice wireless. I guess I had to come out of the stone ages at some point.

Since you mentioned that sometimes it disconnects from USB, the sound playing is because it disconnects and reconnects. You don't get an error message because it's immediate but the notif. sound is playing anyway. Diagnosis: The mouse got old, time to get a new one.

Only problem with wireless mice is that your wrist gets tired and your Photoshop skills take a hit because of the heavier mouse (batteries).

Wireless mice tend to have a slight lag to them too. Can be annoying when trying to get pin-point accuracy. That's why I love my mx series logitech. It has excellent tracking and also boasts a sensitivity button that changes the dpi resolution of the mouse's sensor so I can control how fast the cursor moves thus changing the accuracy on-the-fly.

I've had that issue before. It was the mouse going bad, specifically a bad connection somewhere inside of it. Replaced the mouse and the issues went away. Pick up a cheap mouse and see if it stops the problem.
