Proteus, an open source Meta search engine script?

Anyone here tried the Proteus an open source Meta search engine script? What has been your opinion of this script?

It's wayyy too slow to be useful. Server load becomes a problem quickly too.

I used to use a modified version of FDSE years ago to run a Linux search engine but Google started their own (was google.com/linux) so we shut ours down. Now google has dropped the little niche search engines so I may start another.

If I do, I am going to be spidering pages rather than using a meta script.
