U.S. Developing Virtual Range to Battle Cyberattacks

The Pentagon?s advanced research arm, which is credited with having developed the forerunner of the Internet in the 1960s, is in the process of building a replica of the Internet that will function as a ?virtual firing range? and allow researchers to simulate both foreign and domestic cyberattacks. The National Cyber Range is expected to be fully operational within a year, at a cost of about $130 million. It will have the ability to be completely reset after each experiment, allowing experiments on things like new network protocols and satellite and radio frequency communications to be run in quick succession.
