my granny had one, its an oak box where youd put a lil bowl in with charcoal to put it under the table during dinner or in the livingroom.
In the 20s most of the houses had 2 rooms and a slidingdoor, to prevent heatloss, since they all had charcoal heating. If you were poor or didnt wanna heat the whole house this was to keep your feet warm.
