Washing down steak with beer?!? Try a nice Cabernet or Merlot instead. Wine compliments steak much better than beer. You can even add some on the steak while cooking or create a nice wine sauce.
If you saute the onions and mushrooms first, you can make them nice and carmelized before putting them on the steak (btw, try shitake mushrooms sometime).
Oh well, beer or wine, it's your choice. Have a nice dinner...
