I just checked my Netgear router and you can't forward icmp requests to a computer on the inside. The only thing you could do was to enable/disable ping replies.

So if you have a Netgear router, you're shit outta luck. You have to come up with a different solution like checking if port 139 is up/open and forward that request to your laptop.
