4,300 square feet isn't that big of a space. If you are honestly getting $1500 electric bills, the place isn't efficient what so ever. And to prove it, you had to go buy an external AC unit just to keep yourself cool, which just proves that the house was poorly designed. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but yeah - the place sounds like a shit hole.
