...but fortunately I caught it in time and put it out with a fire extinguisher before to much damage was done. It burned my phone lines...singed my desk...melted my trash pail and burned a large hole in my carpet. My own stupidity caused it to happen. Stupid is as stupid does.

Glad you had an extinguisher. It's something that won't cost too much, but god forbid if you ever need it, you're sure going to be happy you had one. And kicking yourself if you don't.

Well...I have the fire damage cleaned up and my phone working again. I put a throw rug over the damaged carpet. i did this a few years ago, dumped an ashtray into a garbage bag thinking everything in the ashtray was out, went downstairs and put the garbage bag into its place in the corner of the kitchen. went back upstairs, maybe 10 minutes later I went back down to the kitchen to get something - garbage bag in flames. i didn't want the embarassment of having a fire truck pull up, had no fire extinguisher, used pails of water to put it out. but the floor was very hot and scorched, the entire floor was hot not just the area around the fire and i was freaking out that the sub floor was burning - i don't have many tools, no axe, i grabbed a big screwdriver and just started tearing the floor apart, ripping away plywood with my bare hands, cutting them all up - opened up a big hole and poured buckets of water into the sub floor and waited all night just in case.
floor cost 5K to repair
