You hear it in music and in the movies. It's only a word. It's how you say the word that matters.
What Mel said was OK. He didn't say, "Look n*gger, I'm going to drag you from my truck." Which would be TOTALLY different. In fact, the "gang" he was referring to would in fact be n*ggers, as THAT is the type of group of guys that would do such a thing if they were black. He's calling it like he sees it.
