    Pasadena, Ca. WTF!!!

    There is a Line for around the whole block for the Iphone. Why do they have to have it now. Why can't they just buy it from Best Buy or Wal-Mart even Radio Shack in a week. Why do people torture themselves like this. Spending the night in a chair. WHY????

    Before they know it, Iphone 5 will be out. I can't believe what people do.

    It's a work day too, if one of my employees called in sick today then I saw them with a new Iphone tomorrow. I would FIRE THEM. Don't these people work???

    It's just a phone.

    Also, there is one in the mall, and I heard that line is wrapped all through the parking lot.

    It all comes down to the power of Marketing. Amazing!

                          there is a limited supply and by human nature, we want what we can't have. I went to the mall this morning and the line was out the down the hall, around the corner and almost out the door. Took someone 6 hours to reach the door where I was standing, good thing I left after 30 minutes.

                          a few people that were in line with me were either calling in sick or already have. that IMO is stupid

                                                          Maybe you are right, Apple hires about 400K people to stand in line. Great idea.

                                                                      This is the generation whose parents stood in line and fought each other to buy Cabbage Patch Dolls, Power Rangers, Beanie Babies and the rest of the "must have" toys (which is really all an iphone is for the vast majority of the people in these lines). It makes sense that they think this is normal.

                                                                      I didn't have to wait in any line to buy my old refurbished Blackberry ;)

The need for transcendence is high up in the Maslovian needs hierarchy. This type of social participation though, waiting in line to buy a phone or waiting to watch a movie, is the post WW2 mass consumerist commercialized version of the older modes of transcendentalism--monasticism, spiritualism, etc. Same need, different economic context. Can't really judge which is more worthy.
