On the whole, people are not consciously negative or positive: they just adopt the most popular position. And the real negativity comes not from overt comments and behavior, but because the vast majority set horizons in their lives which guarantee, if not failure, no more than predictable success.
Put that down to being realistic (only so many can be successful) or to the human psyche (we are communal creatures and therefore most are genetically programmed to be followers), as you wish. The result is the same.
