    Revenge Porn tactics by Ashley Madison (SHADY)

    So a customer of mine just brought this to my attention earlier today.

    Once you sign up for Ashley Madison, even a free account, let's say you want to delete your account, Ashley Madison makes you PAY THEM to remove/delete your account. See the pic below

    For all intent purposes, it's basically the same tactic the Revenge Porn owner did and got jailed for. Revenge Porn gives the girls the option that he will remove their content if the girls pay him.

    Ashley Madison is doing the same thing by resorting to bullshit shady practices by forcing users to pay them $19 to remove/delete their account . I stress there is no other way of deleting your account on Ashley Madison unless you pay their extortion $19 fee.

    That's shady shit on Ashley Madison's part.

              2) Never put a photo of your actual face online.

              3) Use prepaid credit cards to pay for website subscriptions. (use fake name to register the card)

                                                                  That said AM could be walking a fine line here considering where their offices are based out of and the privacy laws and how they deal with people requesting to have their user data removed. A user could save the $20 and just send an email request to have all their details removed.

                                                                                                      Although it comes as no surprise that AM wants to wring that last 20 bucks out of a resigning member, two concerns come to mind:

                                                                                                      1) This is playing on the fears that a member's spouse might stumble in there from their browser trail and discover their loving hubby or wife is trolling for an affair. Not. good.

                                                                                                      2) Although this is in many regards different from the revenge porn extortion scheme that played out recently, god help them and the rest of this if some investigative reporter stumbles across it and publishes it in the Washington Post. The line is just to thin for them to differentiate and it's just another black eye for the adult industry waiting to happen.

To me it seems somewhat similar to a content model later wanting to buy back her videos and have them taken down from a paysite. The bigger issue is if that profile has already been spidered and aggregated elsewhere, they can't take it down 'from the entire internet' anyway.

                                                                                                                  That's why reputation management is such a rapidly growing field and why I do so much work for clients in that regard. Securing your online persona, differentiating it from aliases, diluting unwanted references and constructing references you find more favorable are worthwhile strategies that pay off more and cost less if you start them before you have a reputation problem to overcome.

They aren't charging you to end your account or billing, just to delete your account. What difference does it make if your account is still in their system or not?

                                                                                                                                                      Would you expect GFY to delete your account if you decided to stop posting here? Not likely you would probably just stop posting. Why would it be any different for a porn account? Would you expect Amazon to delete your account if you decided to not use Amazon again?

                                                                                                                                                      As long as you aren't being billed and delete or change your card info.. what difference does it make?
