What's the best type of server for a tgp, virtual or dedicated? Can you please give the pros and cons for each. TY!

Most startups don't need all the horsepower that dedicated hosting requires.

With virtual, your company leases a piece of server that use shared resources, bandwidth and etc.

Dedicated hosting do not share their resources (and downtimes, etc). Everything is for you and your business.

This is the ideal setup for high demanding websites that require large storage space and transfer speeds for multiple databases or for sites that run memory hogging applications.

Depends, dedicated is better because you needs availability, on the other hand, it costs a bit more, but again, if your business is making money, you have to take care of your money!.

On dedicated you have managed and unmanaged solutions, managed is where you dont have to worry about server security, getting ddosed, patches and upgrading hardware, hosting company does everything for you.

Virtual is kinda the same thing, but again, you only use a small piece of the pie.

And unmanaged, you have the same benefits than the first, but you do everything by yourself, or your admin.

Pretty much sums it up...

To give you an idea of requirements, I put my own 2 TGP's on one of my virtual accounts. One used 7 GB bw in it's first month, the other 5 GB. Both take up less than 1 GB of space (with about 7000 thumbs/ galleries on each

)

They both share a Dual Core 64bit server, along with a few other client accounts of mine, and not once has CPU usage gone over 2% ;)

Its cheap enough these days for a dedicated server (about $100/mo). I would go with a dedicated for anything.

Webair and OC3 are good companies.

For smaller traffic, use a virtual host, such as the one in my sig, for a considerable larger traffic, use a dedicated server, such as the ones of
Exmasters' gift - $0.29/GB for galleries, or

So say a brand new TGP is gonna get 1 or 2 sales a month (earning the webmaster ~$60) how does that justify a $100/mo hosting bill?

Start virtual, go dedicated when you actually need it.

Exactly, you can always upgrade according to your needs and there is no need to waste money upfront.

Keep in mind that managing a server, keeping it secure and smoothly running requires some knowledge...so even if you go for your own server, don't get a cheap unmanaged one if you don't exactly know how to run this baby.

I've had a dedicated server for almost a year now. I wouldn't recommend anything but a dedicated server. I fought with virtual hosting for years, and it sucks.

In cost terms, virtual is much cheaper to start off with - you can get a 2.5 GB disk space and 50 GB bandwidth package for as little as $4.99 these days (hit me up if you want to know more), and until you're actually making money there's probably not a lot of point in forking out $100 per month for a dedicated server that is just going to be overkill for what you need.

That said, if you do want a bit more power and flexibility than virtual, you could always get a VPS; but on most VPS' you'll have to install the OS and configure everything from the ground up, which is no easy task for somebody new to server management or even something like the shell envrionment. However, if you can get your head around the technical side of it, VPS packages can nearly be as cheap as virtual - VPSLink offer 2 GB disk space and 100 GB bandwidth per month on theirs, but the resources for that package are pretty scarce, and as with all VPS providers, you are pretty much on your own if something you've installed goes wrong, so you'll have to optimise the living crap out of any software you install.

Hope I haven't confused you even more.
