if you need an extensive list of useful plugins, community support, etc, you need vbulletin... |

If you're going to pay I guess vbulletin is the way to go... But phpbb3 is better and it's free.

Many years ago doesn't count... phpbb2 sucked tremendously. phpbb3 is super ultrasonically way better than vbulletin, and I run both types of forums right now. Of course, this is my opinion... but try it out and see for yourself. I'm willing to help ya for free to show you.

I cannot say anything about vbulletin 4.0.
I cannot recommend Vbulletin 3.8. The templates are from the stone age. Everything is done with tables. It's very annoying. And from what I;ve heard during the development phase of 4.0, everything is now done with CSS, which is not a good thing, either.
