Whos watching the state of the union?
So tomorrow night Obama is going to give his first state of the union address after a year in office.
Healthcare looks dead Unemployment has gone up Terrorist activity has gone up Government Spending is out of control, like it ever was in control? And so far the only thing that I've heard he's going to do is pass a bill to generate new jobs and put a freeze on spending and new tax cuts for people with kids. Independent voters have a bigger % and a new party, tea baggers, is gaining What does everyone think he's going to do?

I think he's going to read a well-written speech from the teleprompters and smoothly convince the United Sheep of America that everything is going great.

I'll watch it, but he has lost my confidence. I seriously think he is going to be a one term president.

I think this guy is a crock of shit. I have thought that since day one, but I didn't vote. I feel like the government saying we have the 'right' to decide who presides us by voting is their excuse to do whatever they want to do, then say that we are the only ones to blame since we 'voted' for the person. I mean, us voting for a pres doesn't even matter. It is decided by the electoral college, who we have no control over.
You're right. Unemployment has increased. Layoffs still happening like it's an everyday thing. (oh wait, it IS nowadays.) Gas has went back up another 50 cents a gallon on 3 months. For no fucking reason. Milk doubled itself in price a couple weeks ago here, for no reason. I jsut paid $5 for a gallon of cheap ass orange juice, even after the florida freeze sent TONS of oranges up here to us, that they charge 50 cents a piece for. This fucking country is outrageous, insane, and not worth it. I don't know if I even want to have kids. they'll jsut have to pay back 50% of their income to taxes because this idiot mother fucker president of ours feels the need to stick his fat ass nose into every country's business. Fuck this. When is the state of the joke, I mean union, address supposed to happen?

I think he's the President who inherited the biggest, stinkiest pile of shit from a previous administration in the history of our nation, and he's doing the best he can, and The Republicans are so partisan they put the GOP in front of the USA; in addition, we have a twenty second attention span, and if all this shit doesn't get cleans up in 20 seconds, everyone gets pissed and points the finger at him.
I love critics who never offer up solutions. They just name-call and bitch and whine, cause that's all they know how to do. |

He will do what just about every president does when they win the office after the opposing party held it. He will move to the center.
Every president sweeps into office promising the world to his base supporters and tries to deliver. Then they find out it isn't that easy. It is easy to say you will do stuff while you are on the campaign trail, but not so easy once you are actually behind the desk and doing the job. So they get into office and try to pass some bills and do some things to make their base happy and some of it works and most of it doesn't and in the process they anger the people that really are to thank for them being there, the independents. So after 1-2 years they shift back to the center. That is what he will do. He will say we are winning in Afghanistan and our new strategy will let us claim victory and get out of there. He will say we are drawing down more and more every day in Iraq. He will say the stimulus plan saved the economy from crashing and burning. He will talk about health care and say that it is going to get a "reboot" of sorts and they he is still committed to it. He will say he is dedicated to cutting the debt and cutting spending. He will then talk about how we are going to spend money on education and other things. He will say that the economy is recovering. He will then say that he is going to start up a jobs bill that will put people to work. And some of it will be accurate and some of it will be bullshit and some of it (like a jobs bill) should have been done on day 1 when he took office. All in all it will be a well delivered speech because he is charismatic and a great speaker and while it will not give much substance, it will cause his polls to bump up a couple of points and it will give the democrats a foundation to campaign on in the upcoming mid term elections. |

Doesn't matter if he is or not. All of the flip-floppers who expect the government to fix all of their woes will just get pissed with whoever comes in next and do it all over again because no government is going to fix the problems that largely stem from society itself.

The funny thing is that a lot of you are counting on one man to fix all your problems, when the solution to fixing anything is to work together.
I won't even begin to imagine how things would look in the world today had McCain/Palin won the election.

Lets face it, he couldn't get shit done with unlimited power for a president, quit telling us it's the GOPs fault and coming up with excuses. The GOP hasn't had any power in the house and senate for 3 years and no power at all for a year. So quit blaming them, this rides on the Democrats shoulders.

It seems to me that the U.S. is quickly approaching it's limit as a contiguous union. Historically, most governments/systems stay in place for about what? 300 years or so before they undergo some major upheaval if not a complete replacement? The best of the best systems can't survive under the weight of basic human nature and greed and each administration takes on more crap, corruption and bloating than the last. I feel like I'm watching someone blowing up a balloon to it's limits and just waiting for it to pop.
The question is.... what comes next? How will you survive and even flourish when the balloon does burst?

Thats what I'm afraid of. We have had presidents that could get something done, Reagan was the last one.

Like getting impeached?
He did get things done, after 94 when the GOP took over the house and senate, he changed his course, which is what Obama has to do or he will be gone in 2012

All the promises Obama made during his campaign will come back and bite his behind in 2012. Because of the many things he promised, it will be hard to deliver. But what do I know? I still think that we should have "re-elect Gore, in 2004".

I don't agree with everyone who says Obama will be a one term president. He might be, but we are three years away from the presidential election. A lot can happen and in politics three years is a lifetime. Just look at the election in Mass. Three months ago if you would have said that the a republican would win Ted Kennedy's Senate seat in one of the most liberal states in the union most people would have laughed you out of the room. The reality is that Obama's re-election is entirely in his hands. Three years from now if the economy is doing decently, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are doing okay and he is making steps towards getting some of the stuff he has promised to work on (like health care ) done he will win re-election. It is very difficult to beat an incumbent president (hell just look at Bush in 2004), it is nearly impossible if he is doing a decent job. |

McCain knew very well that he'd be forced to co-operate. That's why his whole campaign was based on bi-partisanship and his "Straight Talk Express" where he went up to Detroit and told the car workers there, something like "some of those jobs we lost here, they are not coming back". He could have been hated by the GOP for all his co-op with the democrats but everyone would deep down know that it was necessary.
Anyhow, I guess none of us can really afford to hope for anything else than for things to get better. What ever the national debt amounts to, it's a very unhealthy amount and it needs to come down a bit or interest payments will kill the economy for long time to come.
