Crap. My carport just collapsed under the snow.

I'm in the kitchen cooking dinner and I hear a loud crash. The snow here is melting (it has been snowing out of control here for the last week with about 10 inches on the ground which never happens and now it is warming up and melting) so there have been some noises all day with ice breaking and falling out of trees and things like that. At first I thought it was that, then it got real loud. I go over to the window and see the roof of my carport collapsed in on my car.

I walk around with a flashlight and see it just gave in. Luckily it seems my car only got a couple of scratches on it. The odd thing is that I called it. The house was built in 1989 and the carport was added at the same time so it is kind of old. Earlier I am talking to my brother and tell him I am ready for the snow to go away because I am worried about it caving in the carport roof then about three hours later it happens. I think it was the rain that did it in. The snow has been here for three days. If it had just melted I would have been okay, but it rained hard for about three hours and then froze on the snow and I think that added weight did it.

My brother said on his drive to my house to help me get my car out he saw three others that had the same problem. I've been meaning to tear that thing down and build a newer better version, I was just hoping to wait until it was a little warmer.

Merry fraxing Christmas.

The roof on the carport was at a slight slant, basically it was designed to just move water which is mostly what we get here. So the snow piled up on it pretty quickly. the new one will have a much steeper slant to disperse weight better so if this ever happens again it will have a better chance of holding up.

I think the rain is what killed me. It took the snow okay then it started warming up. If it would have melted off I think things would have been fine. Then it poured for a couple of hours and I think that extra water weight did me in.

Having the same kind of things going on up here in the Seattle area. People just down the road from me have a carport kinda awning thing for their motor home. Once the rain hit today and weighted down the 9 or 10 inches of snow already there, the back half of it collapsed.

I was out shoveling a bit in the driveway earlier today and noticed that the snow prior to today had been very very light. The first few days of it, it was so light that you could move it off the drive with a pushbroom. Not today.. it's heavier than all get out trying to move the piles of it that I'd previously shoveled.
