Is orange county considered the boonies?
I live in Orange County in California and I feel like it's the boonies. It's not as bad as say Idaho or Kentucky, I mean there are no fucken cows here and no farms and there are huge malls (south coast plaza) here and of course there is the beach but I still feel like it's the boonies and really boring.
For some reason I think LA is the most exciting city, like really busy and alive and energetic with lots of high rises (I like tall buildings) and it's the heart of the movie industry, but Orange County seems like the boonies, like it's in the middle of nowhere. |

Laguna Beach to me is even more "boonies", it's isolated. It's a small town. Yes, it's a wealthy and all but it's not that exciting. That's why all the kids from the mtv show "Laguna Beach" all moved to L.A once they turned 18. (Lauren moved to LA and now is on mtv show The Hills). Seems like LA is the place to be cause all the Laguna Beach kids move there once they hit 18. seems like all the kids want to get out of there and go to Hollywood. Hollywood is more exciting.

Not sure where you live in OC, but I've lived in both OC and LA and I'll take OC in a heartbeat. Of course it depends what your tastes are, and I do enjoy some of the coastal parts of LA county, but no way I'd want to live in the heart of LA. Not sure how you can call it the boonies either as OC has a huge population base, tons of freeway and many things to do.

No it's not the boonies. Jesus.
Population 3,002,048 about 1 in 12 Californians live there and about 1% the the entire population of the US. 5th largest county in population in the US and you ask if it's the boonies? Also 21 states have SMALLER populations than orange ounty |

It feels too suburban! It's not busy and exciting like LA. It moves slow. I even hate the roads, it's too big and there are too many lanes. In LA, the streets are smaller, like around Sunset blvd it's more crowded, it has more of a "city" feel. I feel like Orange County is suburbia hell. It doesn't have a ton of high rises like LA does, like when I drive to LA I can see all the gazillions of high rises from the freeway. It's just so busy and exciting and crowded. It feels like everyone is in a rush to "go places", like everyone wants to be successful and a lot of people go there to become actors etc. OC is boring, it's where people go to raise families etc

Oh and the most boring city in OC is Irvine. I cannot stand that city. Yes, it's SUPER SAFE (like the #1 safest city in the country) and it's SUPER CLEAN and SUPER WELL PLANNED (it's a master planned community) but jesus is it boring there. Every single house there looks the same, like every street there looks the same, it's boring as hell. It's live driving through one of those scary cities from the movie "The Stepford Wives" or something .

Holland is even MORE isolated than orange county! They don't sell certain brands there, for example MAC cosmetics only got there within the last few years while it was popular here for like many many years already. |

i live in LA and while I love it (we have the best clubs, food, girls (in US), blah blah blah) some of the shit like the traffic is really really annoying. oh and the high rise buildings are cool until you have an office on the 25th floor and it takes 5 minutes just to get outside or 10 minutes to get something from your car that is right under you. not to mention the $250/month parking spaces u need to spend having an office in one of this high rise buildings. same shit different pile

I don't like NY. I know it's even busier and more hectic than LA, but I like La because of the glamour aspect of it and I like Hollywood. In NY people are very ambitious and want to be successful but in LA I think more people want to be stars. I like that more.

Personally I love the boonies.
Ideally my next house and what I am looking at has land owned on 3 sides by the USFS that will remain undeveloped which happens to be about at least 500 to 2000 or more acres in each direction on average. Small personal drive way, inability to see town from my house. If by chance I go to the local town it can be counted in blocks and only a select few of those are comercial in nature. I am tired of busy and high energy, though they did allow me to have what I want when I do move.

For example, the inland empire also has a big population http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inland_Empire_(California) Population Ranked 14th in the U.S. - Total CSA - 17,775,984 [1] MSA - 4,026,135[2] but I consider that the total boonies, it's out in the middle of nowhere and I would die if I live there. I'd MUCH rather live in OC than the Inland empire or San Bernardino County. Those areas are even more depressing. Like REALLY depressing. They are so far out there they can't even receive the popular Los Angeles radion stations like KIIS FM. I don't know how to explain it, it's just the total boonies, even though there is a large population, there's shopping centers and malls everywhere, freeways everywhere, they probably have plenty of nightclubs (but not cool ones like in LA) it's still considered "out there in the sticks". Yes, they are all big cities, but not "LA" type cities, but like boonie cities. |

I do agree OC is nowhere as bad as cities in the midwest etc like somewhere isolated and desolate like in Idaho or Kentucky where they have potato farms and cows, that's even more depressing. At least we have the beach here and more city-like and you can find anything everywhere, such as any type of restaurant and of course there is Disneyland etc but it's not AS city like as LA. I hold LA as the holy grail of "cityness". |

Bausch, you're a somewhat strange person. Holland isn't isolated, it's just a different country with different needs, a different market (hence the lack of "MAC"), a different culture.
In fact, I bet people in LA, NYC or London are more isolated than they are in what you call "the boonies". People who are always going somewhere are isolated, take that as a rule of thumb. |

I know Holland is not isolated, but sometimes certain products/brands are not available there. It's probably because most Dutch people could care less about them but I know that SOME Dutch people do like those items because they are asking about it on-line on other forums and complaining how they can't buy this product or that product... |

dude oc is so diverse and the economy is great, just look up the demographics of oc - a little of everything. education is huge here, you aren't in the boonies or near a small town in kentucky or idaho where the walmart is the main attraction.
not sure where in oc you are or who you socialize with but oc is really a top choice in the country for entertainment, to live, raise children in and pretty much is a very cool place. maybe if your not in downtown santa ana or the ghettos of anaheim in some horse barn.

The isolation is far from an issue for me. If something did happen the effects are about the same as if I was living in a city. Seen plenty of newstories where someone was dead and it took weeks or months for the body to be found in a major city. Also know you can often scream you head off and in many cities others just do not want to get involved. I find the level of help a bit better in smaller towns. I will agree in most small towns most everyone does know most everything pretty quick as gosip travels fast. Though there happen to be plenty of skeletons in everyones closets that nobody still knows of. I have also seen many small towns where the entire town can keep quiet about matters. I suppose it just goes down to what you share or let out in your life.

I like L.A because it seems more glamorous and I like the grittiness of it, even tho some parts of LA are ghetto I think it gives it more character. Irvine is SUPER SAFE and SUPER CLEAN and I cannot stand it because it looks like a city from a horror movie like Stepford Wives because everything is TOO perfect and TOO safe and TOO well-planned. It lacks character. It's suburban hell. |

I used to live in Huntington Beach and I didn't like it. I grew up there, went to school there. I hate it. I lived there around 2 years ago again and I didn't like it.

I'm in Huntington Beach... and love every minute of it...
You can't judge a city by it's tourist traps... Lame St. is horrible. Only reason we ever go near it is for a nice walk on the pier, or if friends are already planning a bar excursion starting there. The city, and county both are quiet when you want them to be, but plenty going on if you know where to look. My only problem with OC has been vacationing typically sucks... We go anywhere else, all we look forward to is coming back home to OC where it's nicer.

you've said a whole bunch of times you're anti-social and don't like to go to bars and clubs - so what difference does it matter whether the city you're in is exciting?
all you need is a place with a good mall, cable and internet and subscription to the National Enquirer to make you happy.
