do any of you record your sales and expenses using excel? If so, what template do you use? I've been trying to keep a record of my sales, what checks im getting, from who, and when. Thanks for the help.

Skip Excel, go straight to QuickBooks. You'll thank me later. I kept my accounting in Excel for quite some time 'cause I thought QB was too complex. I was very wrong. You can get QB 2004 on Ebay for $25. Accounting hasn't changed since 2004 so there's no reason to get a fancy new version.
