lol you think the US govt cares what the WTO thinks.. They already ignored the last WTO ruling about online gambling so why will this be any different.

Tony404 has it right.. it's not being banned because it's immoral as they claim. It's being banned because big biz casinos have lobbyists with deep pockets and the politicians pockets are deeper.

You can also read up on the US / Canada softwood lumber dispute. Canada won any number of times with the WTO, there is a free trade agreement in place, and yet the US slapped huge (50% or more) duties on lumber from Canada.

When it comes to trade, the US is the biggest bunch of pricks around.

All I care about is poker. I was making good $$ from two major sites. Party Poker and Titan poker. They both paid the best. I was rev sharing. When they shut their doors down to US players I lost most of my income from the poker affiliate game. I think thats all that most people want is for poker to be included in the law.

here is some more news on the subject

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070315/..._congress_dc_3

Rep. Barney Frank said on Thursday he will give details in the coming weeks on possible legislation to repeal a ban imposed last year on online gambling.

They eventually lost that though and had to pay it back.

I think it's a little more of a symbiotic relationship than that. I've heard people in Canada say before "We can just stop selling X (water/wood/electricity) to the US. That'll show them!". In reality, Canada's not going to throw away that income for resources they can send elsewhere (especially in regards to water and energy).

This is exactly right. Whether or not the WTO has the authority to re-institue US based banks to once again accept gaming transactions without the UIGEA coming into play is a major factor.

The main thing is, its too little, too late. Many people have already been arrested, companies have pulled out and sold outright, and processor companies have pulled out, downsized or outright closed shope.

The US gov't geezers won either way. They got effective results by passing UIGEA.

Since Canada is the USA's largest trade partner, I'd say that the phrase "and vice-versa" applies.

What I find odd in all of this is, why didn't those "big casinos" extend their business online themselves instead of ruining the whole online gaming market for everyone?

They make themselves look like a pack of greedy selfish assholes in an industry supposedly based on entertainment and hospitality.

Then that is the mistake of the people running the on line business. They have deep pockets as well. USE THEM!

I am just trying to find out some info here.
Is it legal in the U.S. to run an online casino?
Is it going to make a comeback??
I know a few years ago it was big but then I heard it might be banned from the U.S. and Canada but I have heard very little since then.
It looks like a good way to make a profit can anyone out there help me?

Please post links and or past experience in this kind of site that would help me to better understand any of this subject it would be a great help...
thanks-Janet

I don't know why the US wouldn't want online gaming. Its just more money they can tax on. Makes no sense. People are going to do it anyway.

The ban will be lifted when the B&M casinos are ready for it to be. Which will be when they have a plan to monopolize the industry, at least in the US. Then they will lobby to have the ban lift with their set of rules.

Over and over again you see the USA do whatever the hell they want.
They want everyone else to follow their rules but won't follow rules themselves.

WTO says the USA online poker ban is illegal = they do it anyway, even though its illegal.

USA argues at the UN for invasion of Iraq is rejected = they do it anyway even though the war is illegal.

The USA government put tarriffs (taxes) on incoming Canadian softwood lumber, collecting billions in taxes which the WTO deem illegal. The US government did it to subsidize the US lumber industry and hasn't paid back the taxes. This is despite the free trade agreement.

Citing "mad cow disease" the US government closes the US-Canadian border to Canadian beef imports and the ban continues even after the issue is resolved and even after MANY more cases of mad cow disease are found in USA beef. The ban continues to help the US livestock industry.

= the USA does whatever the fuck they want as long as it benefits them. If anything ever comes up that hurts them, they cry bloody murder.

Rep. Barney Frank said on Thursday he will give details in the coming weeks on possible legislation to repeal a ban imposed last year on online gambling.
Just an update on this - he has introduced the bill(earlier today) however he doesnt think the votes are there yet - he is going to have hearings on it in June and until then its best if you are a US citizen to call, email and write your representatives to get this voted on

This is news?? :-)

It's actually the second ruling confirming US violation. After the first ruling the US govt lied and tried to claim they were in compliance - but could not provide evidence of that.

It's hard to comply with ratified treaties when domestic law conflicts with these treaties - specifically, the Wire Act and the Travel Act. Everyone got to make a choice at the end of the day

Asking me? :-)

Basically means it is illegal to interrupt credit card transactions going outside the US to existing trading partners.

The action was first brought by Antigua, Canada, UK and a few other countries in respect of unfair trading practices.

Suppose the next stage, tho no hurry, is either the US comply or the WTO will implement sanctions (tho kinda extreme in this instance) - but there will probably be some kinda penalties/liabilities until there is compliance.

of course, it'd take so long for all of the American troops to get through Canadian customs, they'd probably just give up and go back to the states.
