im selling a domain, im worried that this might be a scam

i listed one of my domains at sedo.com for a fairly good price and i got an email about a day later. heres what it says

Quote:
Hello,

What is the price you can accept for your domain?

Domain names is not main direction of our company. Just additional way to make money online on domain reselling. Our company develops software in databases in Visual C++ and MS SQL Server. We work as contractors of a big corporation.

If you offer more domains for sale with good reselling potential please email us your list.

Looking forward to do business with you.

Regards,
i emailed him back to check the auction link and this is what he sent me

Quote:
I checked your auction link.

1,300 USD. Ok.

Do you sell the name only without web site? I'm interested in the name so web site is not so important.

Do you have an appraisal certificate for your domain name?

Domain name is an investment for me. In other words I'm going to sell your name later and make a profit. If I overpay I won't be able to make a profit in the future. It's very important for you and me to know the current market value of your domain.

Of course, we must be sure that you are engaging a reputable appraisal company. I heard many appraisal companies often made inaccurate appraisals. I will only accept appraisals from independent sources I trust.
To avoid mistakes I asked domain experts about reputable appraisal companies in a forum
http://domaintalk.ourplace.com/Archive/294763.htm

Just check this posting.

If the appraisal comes higher you can adjust your asking price accordingly. I also hope you can give me 10% - 15% discount of the appraised value.

After I get an appraisal from you we'll continue our negotiations.

How do you prefer to get paid: www.escrow.com, www.PayPal.com check or wire?

Hope we can come to an agreement fast.

Looking forward to your reply.
not that domain talk looks 100% BS

right now im just telling him to use sedo to buy my domain if hes interested...
but in any case, does this sound like a scam?

It sounds like a scam !

"Domain name is an investment for me. In other words I'm going to sell your name later and make a profit. If I overpay I won't be able to make a profit in the future. It's very important for you and me to know the current market value of your domain."

People buying domains and knowing their biz do their own research and calculations before they send you any offer.

When you buy a house you bring in an appraiser and check things out, its not your business to worry about cost, its his business. Regardless of the excuse its always their problem not yours... Use this advice in any situation..

It is a scam. The whole point is not to buy your domain, but to have you use a particular appraisal service. It is an old scam someone is apparently running with again. I got the exact same series of (totally automated) emails over the weekend, regarding one of my domains.

from me:

Ok do you have any news from your apprasial people?
If you are interested, people place a price in the link i gave you so that there is less confusion,
Thanks

him

Usually, people who are selling names or web sites, provide buyers with
appraisals. This is a common practice and I'm not going to change this rule
because it's the best way to protect an investment.

I heard many appraisal companies often made inaccurate appraisals. So I
cannot accept appraisal from each and every site. I will only accept
appraisals from independent appraisal companies I know and trust.

Reading responses from experienced sellers I was impressed by one reply:
"Many Internet users are not smart enough and popular domain brokers are
using this fact to make money. They offer them cheap appraisal services. But
if their customers would have something in their heads they'd understand
experts could not make a professional research for $15-$20. These appraisals
are made by machines. Easy money for such appraisers as
http://www.Afternic.com and several other major brokers that offer cheap
auto-generated appraisals. In my eyes, all services under $60-$65 are not
manual and the results are generated by special scripts. I don't trust
auto-generated appraisals."

The same is true for GoDaddy and SEDO. Their services are not manual. They
are just collecting money using their well-known names.

Thank you for understanding. I'm looking forward to do business with you.

mostly likely an appraisal scam...

however, just incase...

hit reply, put your offer to sell stands at ______ - send money to escrow.com or moniker's escrow service... here your email to begin the process and they can pay to have the domain appraised by whoever they want...

Unfortunately as noted, it is a well documented scam. These scams are terrible because they pray on people who think they have just done very well, they get your hopes up and then rip you off. It would be better if it was just a BS appraisal. Sorry bud. Keep moving.
