Web History: What browser was the first to use Javascript?

I was just thinking about the "inventor" of the exit console LOL -- then I started to wonder who was the first to use javascript. If I can remember correct, Mosaic didn't have javascript, and MSIE wasn't even around back then... Netscape was at the height of its popularity and I'm going to guess that Netscape was the first windows browser to feature Java applets and Javascript... When the first Applets came out I was really excited for a while -- and buying Java programming books -- then I discovered how often Netscape crashed on these Applets and I totally gave up on them for any useful business... Javascript was almost as bad... It seemed like Javascript code would work sometimes in one version of Netscape, but not in others... I remember that Sun had a browser too for their OS which probably implemented Java before anyone else -- but my bet is that Netscape was the first to use Javascript... Does anyone know?

I'm going to guess that consoles became possible around the same time Netscape came up with the idea of "targets"... which I'm going to guess came out of necessity after they were the first to implement frames... I wonder if frames were standardized in HTML before or after Netscape started using them...

It's really sad how Netscape lost the browser battle -- a lot of what we have today we owe to Netscape... When MSIE came out -- all they had to do was invent all sorts of useless HTML tags for Frontpage and then dump that program into the market for dirt cheap... essentially corrupting the entire web with non-standard HTML tags. I'm pretty sure that Netscape did the same thing early on though to beat out Mosaic... only Netscape Gold was very buggy and not a very good WYSIWYG.

Javascript is a netscape concept. Java is a Sun concept. If only netscape could ahere to its own friggin DOM, maybe it would have a chance in the browser wars.

It's getting better with the recent versions based on mozilla.
