Headline last week on FARK.com: "CNN and Christian Science Monitor reporting that missing hot white reporter Jill Carroll has been released."

Those rascals. Imagine commenting on a just-released hostage's physical appearance.

Then again, I heard a couple of radio hosts say the same thing about Carroll. Turns out some men think she's cute.

How terrible, how shallow! (Haven't we been through this before?) But the truth is, whenever a woman is in the news for any reason, we notice her looks.

Is Ms. Carroll attractive? Sure. She's what you'd call "Smart Hot."

A woman who is smart, educated, successful, etc., and also happens to be attractive -- she's Smart Hot. You could make the argument that everyone from Elizabeth Vargas to Naomi Wolf to Queen Noor to Maureen Dowd to Rep. Stephanie Herseth (D-South Dakota) to Condoleezza Rice is Smart Hot, at least in some eyes.

Smart Hot is a lot hotter than just plain (so to speak) Hot.

There are other categories, such as Annoying Hot (hello, Jessica Simpson!), but we'll save that discussion for another day. My e-box can take only so much.
