Interesting GFY CONTEST idea (pls critique)

I'm not sure if it's been done before but has there been a contest where participants qualify by posting HELPFUL or INSTRUCTIVE tips re webmaster tasks/responsibilities. These can take the form of technical issues, productivity boosters, or 'self-help' type posts. Also they can't be cut and paste from another site. Authenticity will be verified by running the entries through text verifier -- http://www.webmasterlabor.com/tools/checker

Pro: Subsidizing a positive, business-related thread that is useful and will probably be bookmarked by some webmasters

Con: How do you judge such a contest since the entries are so disparate? It seems extremely subjective and might turn off more webmasters than it helps. How do you limit the scope of the contest?

I like it.... but will it be hard to find golden nuggets of info from all that crap posts, or will they be collected and presented in an alternative location?

Good question. Probably distilled later or maybe put the 'cleaned up' version in another thread for easier bookmarking/reference.

I'd be willing to display the tips on my resources site, with the tips author credited & linked to authors webmaster service or page?

Yep, it would make for great crosspromotional material as well.

So some of the benefits to participants would be:

1) prizes
2) branding at GFY
3) linkbacks from resource sites
4) direct bookmarkers from your target audience

Would people prefer this over the "Be post #" type contests? It does take more effort and does require more webmaster skills.

Personally, my YES!

The nonsense, to an extent is eliminated by getting rid of the "Oh, 5 more to go" or Bump, etc..

Personally, something like this would have various tips for various things, & it would appeal to all webmasters & GFYers, & would certainly be a good read for any webmaster who is looking to learn & also try new things.

This board isnt known for it's helpful webmaster advice, However, there are great many members of this board who do offer advice, tips & do help. These webmasters who do that don't really get the recognition & kudos they deserve because their help & advice is often buried with all the bullshit & drama threads. This would be their chance to show people what they really are made of.

Hmmm so you're referring to this http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showpo...32&postcount=7

and this? http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showpo...4&postcount=39

I hear ya though. I think such a contest would be a nice TARGETED advertising opportunity for the sponsor.

Biz threads tend to die quickly though so... verdict's still out on this idea...

If you can answer those questions you might be the first to run such a contest successfully.

Thanks--that's why I posted this in the first place. Collective brainstorming.
