car audio amp knowledge needed
putting together a system for my car.
my subs are 4ohm dvc. If i run them in parralell, then that will make them 2ohm correct? they are two 500w RMS subs @ 4ohm (alpine type r), and the amp im looking at is 450w x 2 @ 2ohm. If im thinking right, this will be just about perfect. or am i missing something? |

yes...parallel will divide the resistance. series would combine it.
At least you're not one of those fucktards that's gonna underpower your subs, should sound great! |

gracias. and im actually still looking for an amp that will put out the full 500 per channel, maybe slightly more (and just turn the amp down so it wont heat up as much) but trying not to spend a fortune.
The one i mentioned is a power aucostics amp. They pretty decent? Ive never run anything but rockford and xtant, but looking to try something new |

ahh... i just saw "dvc" in your post...
do little research, those can be hooked up in different ways. you can actually wire 2 4ohm dvc subs and get a 1ohm resistance. |

Cant you do like series and parralell to get 2 ohm? or something like that.. i dunno im confused ![]() |

two dual 4 ohm subs can be:
2ohm or 8ohm stereo or 1ohm or 4ohm or 16ohm mono |

Two dual 4 ohm, run the voice coils in parallel making each sub a 2ohm, then parallel that to make it a 1ohm total.
Get a solid monoblock stable at 1ohm. Don't go for flashy graphics or fancy names... Grab yourself something like Resonant Engineering whatever is their amp thesedays... But remember a good amp at 1.5kwatt rms will (even with a small capacitor (1F)) make your lights dim with every drop of the base. Also remember Alpine is good, but although i never tried myself i really doubt they can take full 500RMS from a good competition level monoblock. It just seems all the companies benchmark themselves these days and all try to put out bigger numbers to impress kids. A friend of mine blew out his Audiobahns when tried to give them their spec RMS power. |

you are probably going to over heat that amp though, at 2 ohm that amp will be cookin, and since its 450 watt max, you are not going to be able to get the full potential out of those subs. I would reccomend a larger amp, unless that 450X2 is the rms power.

well personally im one to over power the subs and then turn the amp down to keep it running cold so i can play full blast for extended periods of time. Those r's are good sounding subs, my friends love em. What are they going in? is it going to be a sealed box?

here is the deal...I would like to know what kind of amp you have and what type of enclousure you are using for the Alpine subs. Most amps are not stable at
2 ohm stereo let alone taking them down to 1 ohm Mono. I was in the car stereo business for 6 years ![]()

I'm upgrading my subs (2x 12") and I'm looking for some nice ones that can handle some hard Drum&Bass.

What are you guys doing as far as proofing goes? Dynamat? I Dynamat'd my trunk lid and some of the sides, but it's still shaking like all hell. Probably going to have to pay some shop to do it.

I only put like $2000 into the system so far, so I know it can get a lot better.

Im about to order 2 sets of 6.5 components as well. And i have a kenwood double din in dash dvd headunit, the 7017 ![]() |

Yeah my car is pretty nasty with backfiring...I don't even think the Dynamat made that much of a difference. That enclosure looks good, and I'm sure it works like a charm. Right now I'm only using a basic chamber enclosure, but I'm thinking of a dual bandpass...any experience with those?

Nice DVD...
What head unit are you using for your audio, or is that both? I'm very happy with this Alpine: ![]() http://iweb.alpine-usa.com/pls/admn/...y=20&p_main=10

i had a dual bandpass with two rockford subs in my last car, hit pretty hard. good sound. Certain amps work better in bandpass than others though

im not big on those power acoustic amps, nothing really from best buy floats my boat. How much were you looking to spend for an amp? getting a matching alpine amp with those subs is kinda a sick thing to do.
bangman: best by far bang for the buck subs are the image dynamic idmaxs. Kinda a lil more expensive, but way louder then a W7 and 10X better sounding. When i toss my current system im getting 3 idmax 12's when i get home tonight ill look up the matching amp for those type R subs from alpine. Its a big amp, but would look sic right in the middle of the trunk in front of the subs sunk into the floor |

ok looks great. I would reccommend that you spend about 50-75 dollars more and get yourself a JLAudio amplifier. 500/1 or whatever the newest replacement for next year is supposed to be. If the amp is to only run the subs then the JLAduio is much more stable. Are you going throught the factory head unit? Hi-Level inputs on the amp? there are other great amplifiers in that price range also..the Phoenix Gold and PPI amps. The more power you run to your subs the better. The way speakers blow is by distorted signals through the voice coil which is often caused by under powering. Also you must remember in order to get 3 db of gain in SPL you must double the amplification...see below dB SPL at 1 metre / Amp Power, Watts, one channel 85 /1 88 /2 91 /4 94 /8 97 /16 100 /32 103 /64 106 /128 109 /256 112 /512
