The true story of Valentine's Day
In some places in the Roman Empire, between about 400 BC and 400 AD, the Romans held an interesting event. A YEARLY LOTTERY in which a man would draw a teen woman's name. For the next year, that woman would BE HIS. Good luck with THAT DRAWING!
Sometime after the Catholic Church came into being, the church fathers, being the evil doers they are, decided to put an end to this practice. They wanted to bring back the popularity of marriage. Get this! The emperor Claudius had forbade marriage by law. So in 270 AD, the bishop with the name Valentine decided to stand up to the emperor. (Guess what's going to happen to HIM). St. Valentine met secretly with lovers and married them (to each other). This was probably not a good idea. Needless to say, Valentine met the sort of fate you would expect. Claudius had him executed on February 24, 270. By 498 AD, the Catholic Church has gained a lot of power. In that year, the Pope declared Feb. 14 Valentine's Day and the lottery system was declared Un-Christian and abolished.

The lottery is this:
You draw the name of a teen girl in your town. Then you "have her" for the whole year .. or .. "are stuck with her" depending on your point of view. Forest .. it is "ours" ![]() ![]()

It is my understanding that Claudius only prohibited young men from marrying. Supposedly this was part of an effort to get more guys enlisting in the army and unmarried men made better soldiers.
