Network Questions!
Ok, a friend of mine has a Mac G4 and wants to network it with his room-mate's PC to share a DSL connection. I told him I could help him do it. I've got a ghetto network setup here at my house, but it's between 2 PCs...pretty simple. Anyone have any experience or websites for Mac to PC networking? Completely stumped.
Oh, and I tried format C: ![]() |

Jollyperv, there should be no problem getting the Mac onto the network for the purpose of sharing the internet connection. Just set the Mac up with the proper IP addresses for itself and the default gateway (router) that you'll be using. I don't remember if the Mac has a DHCP utility so it can grab the proper address from the router or not, but if it can't just manually assign it one from the same range of addresses the PC will be using. If the PC is on the 192.168.x.x net, then just set the Mac up for one address higher than the PC is using.
Networking Macs is pretty easy but it you will not be able to share files between the PC and Mac since netiher one of them speaks the same language for the purposes of shared directories. You can set up Windows NT/2K servers with file services for Macintosh but on a regular Windows 9x or 2K desktop machine you won't be able to without a whole lot of pain.

Ahh, the old ghetto hookup! That brings back fond memories of my youth. You should have seen the ghetto rigging I did with my old Commodore 16 and TI computers!
To share between the PC & the Mac go to cnet.com and get PC/MacLAN. If that doesn't work for some strange reason ... fuck it! Just tell him to get a Netgear wireless card and router for $250-$300 bucks! That way he can set up and share the connection while in the bathroom taking a dump! Mighty appealing!
